U People Episode#16: “Clean Cups, Dives and Gold Stars

Hanifah and Olive travel 2 hours to Jersey to visit friend and playwright Zina Camblin as her new play “And Her Hair Went With Her” debuted at the New Jersey Rep. Later that night they sparked a lively conversation about the rarely sighted Black Obsessive Compulsives, dyke dives and gold star lesbians. Also we have a U People story that involves one woman’s struggle with fried chicken.

Note: We had some technical glitches this episode so the picture may be a bit fuzzy, but we still manage to come with the usual good stuff. check us out at www.iloveupeople.com

  1. Unfortunately, The Wild Rose is the ONLY les.bean bar in Seattle and I think it would definitely qualify as a dive on most nights.

  2. Im totally addicted to Upeople. Its hard to find positivity on the internet. I hope this project grows real big, because it really has an affect on people I got my girlfriend watching it and you guys made her laugh hard. And even though you guys are on another side of the world I can still relate and say my local gay-bar also has an odour.

  3. My local lesbian dive is called mable peabody’s beauty parlor and chainsaw repair. The ladies restroom had two toilets (no stalls) in it. The running joke was the reason it had two toilets was so that you could hold yr girlfriends hand while you went to the bathroom. It burned down last year (or was burned down we dont know if it was arson or not). They are rebuilding, so maybe the bathroom will have stalls now. Mables was a bit stinky like cigerets and beer. but it was/ is our hole in the wall and it will be nice to have it back.Upeople totaly rocks.keep it up.

Henrietta Hudson, though a dive is an institution in the village.

  6. When I lived in Nashville the black gay scene moved from dive to dive on a regular basis…but I think the most horrible was a after hours spot we called “The Church” because it was a gutted church… and then there was “amnesia” that looked like your grandmother’s basement… and “19th Hole” that only had one exit.

    It was just really bad!

Ok the 19th Hole is a bit much. One exit? Sounds like a death trap. Man what us poor folks will do for the promise of love. Hilarious. Where do we get these names from?

    Hey Parker,

Actually we keep a current list of screenings on the home page, just below where it says “Treat Ya Self”. Treat Ya Self” is the U People Screening and Events Calendar . And yes, most likely we will be rolling through Chicago this year.

Unfortunately, in rural, southwest Arkansas, there isnt a dive close to me. I know… I need to take a trip to the big city and experience a part of dyke culture that is the dive.*s

  11. I loved seeing the “And her Hair went With Her” BOC clip. I am known for my over zealous cleaning skills. The statement that black folks don’t put up with it is true. I laughed so hard because it is so true.

Will you be rolling through Boston anytime this year?
