In regards to the violence in Mumbai, I think the recent events reveal how a certain type of body can be seen as a symbol of a certain ideology. These specific bodies (in this case an American or European body) then serve as as symbol for certain ideas or ideologies. This type of violence is not new, it has a long and sordid history that transcends boundaries of race, class, gender, sexuality, nationality, etc. There have been many instances where people use one’s outward appearance as criteria for violence against that person, assuming one’s appearance reflects certain ideologies and/or beliefs. And while not all of us participate in violent behavior, this conflation of appearances with beliefs is something that we all have participated in at some point in our lives. I think that only when we as a collective human race can work to dissociate certain physical identities from certain ideologies, will this type of violence stop.
