U PEOPLE WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
A two hour long workshop that provides a nuanced view of the the themes explored in the film U People. The complex reading of a living documentis integral to it effects as a catalyst for contemporary discourse. This workshop takes in account the philosophical and ideological stances presented in the film and allows the participant to harness their own experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities to not only explore differing point of view but to create and nurture empathy for each unique human experience.

The Beautiful Obstacle:Beyond a Double Consciousness
a. Gender expression
b. Sexual Orientation
c. Racial/Social placement
- Butch, Femme and Everyone in Between
- Objectification vs.Celebration in the creation of Safe Spaces
- Diversity within a minority according to gender expression
- Stratification and dissasociation from community based on a gender non-comformity
- Interrogation of the trans identity, femme identity and butch identity in relation to “passing”
Larger overarching themes:
- What are the cultural markers of black womanhood?
- Commonality versus individual experience.
- The vulnerability and bravery of exposure within and outside of community.
Target Audience:
Young people age 18-25 in academic environments and in neigboring communities. Workshop participant maximum 25. Workshop Length 2 hours.
Objectives:
- To explore a deeper understanding of people who are queer identified and/or persons of color. ‘The struggle is part of the fabric but not the entire garment.’
- To provide participants with an opportunity to experience and empathize with ‘the beautiful struggle.’
- To build a lexicon of cultural markers to bridge individual and collective experiences.
- To build a conscious connection with the experiences of the individual participant and those depicted in the film.
- To strengthen the ability to empathize with all members within the human community.
